Peers are central to our service delivery model, offering a kind of support that professional credentials cannot replicate. Their lived experience, whether with mental illness, substance use, justice involvement, or homelessness, creates an authentic connection that builds trust, reduces shame, and supports residents in believing that recovery and community reintegration are possible. Our peers are selected for their ability to reflect, model resilience, and meet residents with deep empathy and without judgment.
During and outside of regular business hours, Peer Counselors are present to mentor residents in both structured and informal ways. They participate in the intake and orientation process, offering a steady and relatable presence to new residents navigating the uncertainty of their first days in housing. Whether guiding a resident through their lease agreement, explaining how to use a bus schedule, or simply sitting together over a cup of coffee, peers help demystify systems and reduce the social isolation that often accompanies transition.
In addition to individualized support, Peer Counselors co-facilitate programming that promotes recovery, connection, and skill development. These may include peer-led wellness groups, relapse prevention workshops, community-building activities, or expressive arts sessions. They also help organize recreational outings and tenant-led meetings where residents can voice concerns, celebrate milestones, and take an active role in shaping their environment.
